missmithen: I was re-reading the Fellowship of the Ring, and now I realize what a great gift this is from Galadriel to Gimli.  Not just the three strands of hair, as precious and rich in meaning as they are.  But the promise that he will not fall victim to the dragon-sickness that haunts his family, that his heart is safe from that scourge.  “Over you gold shall have no dominion.”
